First-Degree Burns: Transmissions from the Playa

Arthur Graham has launched 40 transmitter books on a reconnaissance mission to the fiery playa planet! With the goal of establishing contact between the alien species inhabiting Black Rock City and the default world, his hope is to collect as many transmissions as possible during the week of the 2011 event. So be on the lookout for those black & yellow composition pads orbiting around the man — Your stories, quotes, questions, comments, jokes, recipes, and doodlings are the data he is after!

How many transmitters will make the rigorous journey back to the default world with their messages intact? How many will regrettably burn up before re-entry? There is simply no way to know…. Only one thing is sure: All notebooks that find their way back to Arthur Graham will have their pages scanned into a free eBook and gifted via download to the farthest reaches of the cosmos.

I am honored and excited to be one of the 40 first custodians of a transmitter book, and I can’t wait to set it free on its journey into the vast expanse of Black Rock City!

Because every bit as much as Burning Man is about saving the environment (yeah yeah), elevating human consciousness (really? Over a holiday weekend?), creating alternative social models (I suppose somebody’s got to do it), Art (if you squint right, I guess), sexual liberation (isn’t that what college is for?), Art (I heard you the first time), and a raucous party spirit (isn’t that what graduate school is for?) … Burning Man is also about a kind of epic confusion that is good for the soul.

People got hurt, sometimes killed. Confronting the divine is as likely to be a brutal process as it is joyous one: we dare not look at the burning bush, or forget that Kali wears a necklace of skulls. Wander out into the playa at night and you won’t just find beautiful bodies dancing in a ring of fire: you’ll find lonely souls, lost and confused, wandering through the desert as they crawl through an existential crisis.

Burning Man is a piece of art constructed on a blank canvas of a dry lake. It is a form of meta-art. It is an art project made of many other art projects that becomes different the instant you come through the gate. You have no choice but to participate because once you are there, you become a part of the overall project. “No spectators” isn’t what some might think it is because you have no choice in the matter. No matter how hard you might try to remain only a spectator, you can’t do it if you are there because you have become an integral part of something larger than you simply by showing up.
