Anna Quindlen’s Commencement Address

From Anna Quindlen’s Commencement Address at Barnard College, NY June 2005:

Here is what awaits you: you will be offered the option of now becoming exhausted adults, convinced that no achievement is large enough, with resumes as long as short stories. But what if that feels like a betrayal of self, a forced march down a road trodden by other feet, at the end of which is–nothing you truly care for?

Fear not. Remember Pinocchio? There is a Jiminy Cricket on your shoulder.

It is you, your best self, the one you can trust. The only problem is that it is sometimes hard to hear what it says because all the external voices and messages are so loud, so insistent, so adamant. Voices that loud are always meant to bully.

Do not be bullied.

Earlier this year I attended a session of Dennis Dalton’s Political Theory class. The students were studying the Tao. Professor Dalton graciously gave me my own pocket-sized copy. I now read it every day, especially this passage. It makes me despair of ever saying anything original. And it keeps me honest. It says:

In dwelling, live close to the ground.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, don’t try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.
When you are content to be simply yourself, And don’t compare or compete, Everybody will respect you.

if there is no lamp there is no light

Goof friends, how then are meditation and wisdom alike? They are like the lamp and the light it gives forth. If there is a lamp there is light; if there is no lamp there is no light. The lamp is the substance of light; the light is the function of the lamp. Thus, although they have two names, in substance they are not two. Meditation and wisdom are also like this.

Non-meditation is the supreme meditation

The Buddha said that all sentient beings possess Buddha Nature. Because of that we have this natural purity, peacefulness and power. We can rest the mind naturally because we are already in possession of these qualities. If one can rest the mind naturally, that’s the best meditation. Non-meditation is the supreme meditation.

London Attacks

The London transit system was hit by terrorist attack this morning. I awoke to the news this morning and quickly went into coping mode. It’s a moral outrage that civilians are intentionally targeted by Islamist forces. It’s a shame that religion brings otherwise rational individuals to commit atrocities such as this. The same forces that led Christians to carry out the inquisition are leading Islamists to carry out their own conquest of the world. Nothing short of the fall of modern civilization will satisfy the thirst of the Muslim world. The rhetoric in the press and the politics is all missing the point. We’re all dancing around political correctness and trying to be tolerant, but as Sam Harris says, “some propositions are so dangerous that it may even be ethical to kill people for believing them”.

just enjoy your ice cream while it’s on your plate

No more words. Hear only the voice within.

I am going my own way
And I meet myself
Which includes everything I meet.

My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it’s on your plate–that’s my philosophy.

Acquiring possessions is a simpler challenge than acquiring meaning. As Western society moves from material want to meaning want, we must always be aware that acquiring meaning is harder to come by than a car or house.

Got beer?

So I got up early (for a Saturday) today to accompany Ted and Jon to a “scratch and dent” beer sale at Western Distributing in Commerce City. Doors open at 8:00 for four hours every Saturday. We arrived there right at 7:00, and there were already more than 100 people in line in front of us. They are a distributor for Miller and other sundry brands. Domestics are $10 per case and imports were $15 per case. I went mostly on a reconnaissance mission — just to see what the deal was. I came out with a case of Fosters, a case of Newcastle Brown Ale, and a case of Boddington’s Pub Ale. I’ve not had any of the latter two, and I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised. For the return trip (whenever that might be) I think I’ll focus on Sam Adams for $10 a case.
