Olbermann: The Four Great Hypocrisies of the Debt Deal

The time is coming when the window for us to restore the control of our government to our selves will close, and we had damn well better act before then. Because this deal is more than a tipping point in which the government goes from defending the safety net to gutting it. This is wrong! And while our government has now declared that it has given up the concept of right and wrong, you and I have not and will not do so. – Keith Olbermann

First-Degree Burns: Transmissions from the Playa

Arthur Graham has launched 40 transmitter books on a reconnaissance mission to the fiery playa planet! With the goal of establishing contact between the alien species inhabiting Black Rock City and the default world, his hope is to collect as many transmissions as possible during the week of the 2011 event. So be on the lookout for those black & yellow composition pads orbiting around the man — Your stories, quotes, questions, comments, jokes, recipes, and doodlings are the data he is after!

How many transmitters will make the rigorous journey back to the default world with their messages intact? How many will regrettably burn up before re-entry? There is simply no way to know…. Only one thing is sure: All notebooks that find their way back to Arthur Graham will have their pages scanned into a free eBook and gifted via download to the farthest reaches of the cosmos.

I am honored and excited to be one of the 40 first custodians of a transmitter book, and I can’t wait to set it free on its journey into the vast expanse of Black Rock City!

My experience with Zicam

A pernicious cold has been making its way though my family. First, my 11 yo son developed a cold and cough about 4 weeks ago. Then about 2 weeks ago my wife developed a severe cold with sinus infection and a hacking cough. So when I woke up last Thursday with that feeling in my throat, I knew what was about to happen.

I’ve never been able to catch a cold in the earliest stages before because I always just think it’s temporary stuffiness, but I knew I was about to be slammed with a nasty virus. I went to the corner drug store and picked up a bottle of Zicam RapidMelt tablets. My father once reported a good experience with a Zicam product a few years ago, so I thought I’d give it a try.

After taking the first tablet and waiting the required 30 minutes before eating or drinking, I immediately noticed a change in my sense of taste. Virtually all of my sense of taste was gone. I had a cup of coffee, and it tasted nothing like coffee. I googled Zicam and loss of taste and found some horror stories of people who had permanently lost their senses of taste or smell after using the nasal swab versions of Zicam (which have since been taken off shelves), so that made me feel a little better that I might not have permanently neutered my tongue.

The writing on the package claims Zicam “reduces the duration of cold symptoms when taken at the first sign of a cold”. This is what I was hoping for, and I can happily report that it is what I experienced. My first symptoms appeared on Thursday, Friday the virus ramped up pretty well but subsided on Saturday, and I took my last RapidMelt on Monday. Some extremely minor symptoms linger, but nothing I can complain about. I’m also extremely happy that my full sense of taste returned within 36 hours of taking my last tablet!

Dusty Swan Cup

I received my stainless steel Dusty Swan carabiner mug yesterday in the mail!

One of my intentions in returning to Black Rock City in 2011 is to actually visit an Irish Bar on the playa, and I’m proud to have been able to support The Dusty Swan in a small way by purchasing this awesome mug. I look forward to having it filled with a beverage of some sort and listening to a sesiun or two! Slainte!

1mileCLOCK – for your consideration

I just backed this project on Kickstarter and offer it for your consideration.

Furry Chairs

A chair is a chair is a chair, but a furry chair is a throne! I spent the larger part of my weekend furring two camp chairs with remnant fur that I found at Goodwill a few months ago. One of the camp chairs I bought at Goodwill and actually stitched the orange and blue fur on that one, while I made an easy slip cover out of the light blue fur for my new/regular camping chair.

Postcards for the playa

With tickets now in hand, it’s time to get making, doing, and planning for Burning Man 2011 – Rites of Passage. To that end, today I made 42 postcards from unique Creative Commons licensed photos I found on Flickr with cardstock and my color laser printer.

I will be using some of them for my own mailing purposes on playa, but I intend to give out the rest (pre-stamped) so that others might have the joy of mailing a note to themselves or loved ones from the best city on the planet.

Burning Man 2011 – Rites of Passage

Ticket order confirmed, and this year, it looks like @tarbendar may make it after all! Let the planning begin in earnest! We’re playa bound!
